The truth behind food advertisement
24 October 2019 (by Daniel Couves (Blackbirds))
Today the children looked in detail about the claims made in food adverts and compared these claims to the facts about the product food on its label.
The children discussed the language used in adverts to make products sound healthy and good for us. We then looked more closely at the contents of these products using their ingredients list and traffic light labelling system. The children were surprised to discover that some products marketed as healthy contained unhealthy levels of things like salt, fat and sugar. We discussed how reading food labels can help us to make more informed choices about the food that we eat and how we need to eat a varied diet to stay healthy. The children then made their own adverts for the products, highlighting both their positive and negative attributes. Their ads can be seen by following the link to our class page.
