Nightingales

Nightingales are a Year Four class and the teacher is Miss Foster supported by Mrs Wahby.

Our main topics for this year include:

Busy Bodies where we will find out about our digestive system, bones and food chains.

Once upon a time in the Stone Age where we will explore different traditional tales and examine the history of the Stone Age.

Welcome to Yorkshire where we will study the geography of our local area.

Each topic includes either a class visit or a workshop to excite and engage the children, as well as to enhance the learning experience.

Swimming and outdoor P.E is on Wednesday. Children need to arrive dressed for PE on this day.

Homework is being given out on Friday this year and needs to be returned on Tuesday mornings with house points awarded for effort and accuracy. Children are expected to access times table rockstars 3x per week at home.

Please keep practising your spellings and time tables (plus the linked division facts), as it will support your learning in school.

This year, all Years Four children will take part in a national times table test which involves knowing all their times tables up to 12x12.

This week we have made a great start to learning all about the Mayans. We debated what it was that made them so successful and designed Mayan headdresses. We also wrote our descriptions inspired by the book The Window and spent time guessing what our friends had written about based on their descriptions.

We have a busy week next week!

Tuesday: homework books and diaries collected, Lineham Farm parents information evening

Wednesday: NO SWIMMING, Easter egg hunt (bring an egg and £1), class assembly

Thursday: golden ticket spelling test, cross country and last day of term!

We have had a super world book day! I loved all of the children’s costumes and hearing about their favourite books. We also read the book Flotsam and created portraits of characters we thought could be in the story.

We also created our final collages! We are excited to show these off in our class assembly in a couple of weeks.

Next week:

Tuesday: homework due in, slipper treat day! For achieving our class target, we have decided to wear slippers in the classroom. Please come to school in normal shoes, bringing your slippers in a separate bag. We will wear them in the classroom and change back to normal shoes at break and lunch time.

Wednesday: swimming and PE, parents evening.

Thursday: trip to synagogue - contrary to previous info, we now know children DO NOT need to bring a scarf, just normal school uniform. Please bring a packed lunch to be eaten when we get back to school.

We enjoyed a sunny walk up to the Quaker's meeting house yesterday. We loved learning about their traditions and exploring the grave yard. We even managed 5 minutes sat in complete silence! Whilst enjoying our last full week together, we also finished off writing our Oliver play scripts and worked as a team to solve challenges in maths.
Children have been sent home with their books from the year tonight. Please can everyone look for any school reading books that are at home?

We are finishing at normal time on Tuesday.

I have throroughly enjoyed teaching every child in Nightingales this year. Thank you parents and carers for your cards, presents and lovely comments. I hope that everyone has a lovely summer!

We have had an action packed week in class! After tackling the tricky topic of time in maths, we have enjoyed composing tunes in music and investigating the purpose of leaves in science. This morning, we went on a walk around the local area to investigate how our local area has changed from Victorian times. We sketched the Littlemoor green and compared it to a photo of the same area in 1890. We have also started creating our moving CAMs toys as part of our DT projects using saws and mechanisms and decorating our shoe boxes. As homework this week, children have been tasked with interviewing members of their families to find out their job titles - we will compare this to the census data from 1911.

Next week:

Tuesday: homework books and diaries collected

Wednesday: last swimming lesson! Outdoor PE

Friday: spelling test

What a busy week we have had! In our English lessons, we have studied the poem 'From a Railway Carriage' and have practised using similes, synonyms and rhyming to innovate the first verse. We have also had a calming afternoon carrying on with our cross stitch projects - the children have all really impressed me with their attention to detail and patience while completing these!

Next week:

Wedneday: swimming (pyjamas needed) and outdoor PE

Thursday: spelling test

Friday: school trip - packed lunch needed

What a fabulous Victorian Day we have had! The children all looked spectacular in their costumes and enjoyed getting into character with their new Victorian persona. We played Victorian games at break, ate gruel for lunch and used ink pens and chalks for our writing. Some children have decided that they wish school was like this every day!

A reminder - children need to bring in shoe boxes asap for their DT projects.

Next week children will complete their final times table check - these will be spread over the week as the children sit them in small groups. Please spend this last weekend practising as much as possible!

Next week:

Monday: projects due

Tuesday: homework diaries collected to check reading comments

Wednesday: swimming and OUTDOOR PE

Thursday: interhouse cycling

Friday: homework given out, classrooms open after school to view projects

Slightly early news post as I wanted to tell parents that tomorrow, as we have achieved our class target, I am allowing the children to bring 1 teddy in to school for the day. The teddy must be able to fit on the corner of their desk while working and won't be allowed outside with them at break or lunch. We have spares in school in case anyone forgets!

This week, we have been working really hard on our assessments and writing our own Oliver Twist tales. We will publish these tomorrow. We have also studied Victorian silhouettes in our art lesson and we helped our partner to create their own. Lots of children in class have also achieved their 25m in swimming this week! Well done for working so hard.

Reminders for after half term:

Victorian day is the first Friday back

Children need a shoe box for our DT lessons next half term

Projects are due in on 10th May - classrooms will be open after school for parents and other children to view them

Have a lovely half term!

This week, we have been learning about our focus artist for this term - William Morris. We have examined different pieces of his art and tried to recreate his pieces by sketching them.

We have also spent the afternoon having a 'puplic enquiry' into whether we believed our Victorian Yorkshire town should have a steam railway running through it. The canal workers and coaching innkeepers were very persuasive but we wanted to make sure people had a way to visit the seaside, so a railway will be built!

Next week:

Monday: bank holiday!
Tuesday: homework collected

Wednesday: swimming and indoor PE

Friday: homework given out

What a busy last week of term we have had! In our English lessons, we have read The Chocolate Tree which has helped us to understand how important chocolate was to the Mayans. We have written a setting description of the paradise experienced by one of the Mayan gods.
On Wednesday, our class assembly ran smoothly and I'm so proud of every child for learning their lines and delivering them clearly. We hope you parents and carers enjoyed the performance!
Have a fantastic Easter break and stay safe! No maths or spelling homework is being given out today but please remember to keep up with reading and practising times tables.

First week back:

Tuesday: homework diaries collected

Wednesday: NO SWIMMING, indoor PE

Thursday - Friday: Lineham Farm
